Elkhart, Indiana is located in northern Indiana just south of the Michigan-Indiana state line. It is 110 miles east of Chicago, 150 miles north of the state capital, Indianapolis, and has a population just over 51,000.
Elkhart is known as the "RV Capital of the World" because of its large base of recreational vehicle manufacturers. It has also been called the "Band Instrument Capital of the World" for so many of its instrument manufacturers such as Conn-Selmer, Elkhart Brass, and Charles R. Walter Piano.
For nearly a century, Miles Medical, and later the pharmaceutical giant Miles Laboratories made its home in Elkhart producing products such as Alka Seltzer, Bugs Bunny vitamins, Flintstone vitamins, and One-A-Day vitamins.
Elkhart is at the intersection of the Elkhart River and St. Joseph River. The city gets its name from the elk heart-shaped Island Park and also from Indian Chief Elkhart (cousin of Chief Tecumseh, and father of Princess Mishawaka).
